I Think I like Minimalism

new formatting

I just completely changed the formatting of this website. I had been working on a new grid-based layout for a bit now and was finally making some actual progress on it but decided to scrap all of that and keep it simple. My partner was very disappointed when I showed her and says she misses the old formatting, liking how it "had color." Still, I think I prefer it looking like this.

i think i like minimalism

Thinking about it, I noticed that for most things I create I try to keep them as simple as possible. I have strict formatting guidelines that I stick to when writing a text document or in my personal journal. It shouldn't really have taken me so long to settle on this style. I like it when the things I am creating to be as simple as possible. I think that adding excess things just adds more hassle, more things to keep up with, and it distracts from the actual main function of what I am doing.

When I was younger I went through a phase of wanting to get rid of basically everything I owned, even starting to look into roll-up mattresses so that I could trash my bed frame. A little later I got into figure collecting and did a complete 180. I wanted every inch of my space to be filled with shelves showcasing things I owned and things I liked, pretty much anything else I could get my hands on. Now I don't have the money or energy to be such a rabid collector and have noticed my mindset shifting back to what it was previously.

Currently room is covered in random items, the fallout of my collecting habit. There are little papers and merch on every single surface and there are so many things that I can't even begin to clean a single surface. It is headache inducing and it makes me want to just throw everything out. I don't want to go back to not even wanting a bed frame but there is obviously some sort of middle ground to be found here. Maybe my desire to have my journal and whatnot be as simple as possible is just a product of my actual preference being applied to a space that is much easier to minimize.

That said, I also think there is something fundamentally different between how I feel about formatting and how I feel about decorating. I think a lot of my desire to simplify the things I use comes from just wanting to make the use of them as seamless as possible. That type of thinking rarely applies to something like decorating but it is something I am having to consider. I will be moving in just over a month and me and my partner will have a completely blank space to decorate as we see fit. I am trying to decide how I would want everything laid out and I am finding it hard to land on a good balance. I don't think I want to have nothing out but I definitely don't want to have a repeat of my current decor.

do i want to live with minimal items

...No? I don't think so? One thing that makes me hesitate to say I just want to have as little as possible is honestly just how I feel about video games where you decorate things. I like looking at other people's builds in these types of games and I love the look of the ones where every single inch is covered in something. When playing these games one of my favorite things to do is interiors because I find it fun to try to cram in as much as possible. Then again these examples might not be the most accurate judge of my feelings. I am not sure I can form conclusions on what I want my physical space to look like based on how I like digital representations of physical spaces to look.

conclusion

I don't have much to actually say on this topic. It is just something that has been on my mind lately. I need to get a better idea of how I like interior design and fast as I am about to have to help design a completely blank space. I hope that actually being in the space with all the necessary furniture will help me decide what unnecessary furniture I want as well.
